Silver Linings Playbook:

Critic's Rating:
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher
Direction: David O Russell
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Duration: 2 hours 2 minutes
Story: Pat's bipolar and wife Nikki leaves him. His one aim is getting Nikki back - when he meets depressive Tiffany. Who falls 'madly' in love?
Movie Review: Straight up, Silver Linings Playbook (SLP) is a lovely movie with a heart of caramel - and an occasionally brilliant mind. Teacher Patrick Solatano's (Cooper) wife Nikki has a superiority complex - and an affair. Pat attacks her lover, Nikki leaves, Pat's diagnosed with bipolar disorder and put into a facility. Eight months later, his mum Dolores (Weaver) has him discharged on condition he'll stay with her and dad Pat Sr. (De Niro) - and away from Nikki.
Optimist Pat's one aim is getting better, so Nikki will take him back. But he meets depressive Tiffany (Lawrence), whose grief at losing her husband turns her briefly to compulsive sex, helping whom - by partnering together for a dance competition - might help Pat win Nikki back. But first, Pat must deal with his obsessive-compulsive father, friend Danny (Tucker) whose mental health status isn't quite certain, therapist Dr. Patel (Kher) who plays the one song that triggers Pat's rage - and his own increasingly crazy feelings for Tiffany.
The acting simply shines - Cooper is magnificent as handsome oddball Pat, struggling to keep it sane, while Lawrence is a treat, her sadness-tinged sexiness like a modern Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Others deliver too, De Niro superbly superstitious about TV remotes during football games, Weaver strong as silk as a supportive mom, Tucker hilariously urging Pat and Tiffany to "black up" their dancing, Kher calmly noting, "That's very, very manic indeed."
The story's endearingly intelligent - "I apologise on behalf of Ernest Hemmingway!" yells Pat breaking a window, outraged by a novel's sad ending - perfumed by quirky, unconventional romance, celebrating a love for life that hurts and heals together. There are tiny quibbles - it could've had a tangent less - but at the end, you're left with pure silver lining and no cloud.
NOTE: You will not like this movie if you like yours regular, not eccentric.

A Good Day To Die Hard:

Critic's Rating:
Cast: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney
Direction: John Moore
Genre: Action
Duration: 1 hour 23 minutes
Story:
Detective John McClane is 'on vacation', but he is destined to find trouble and vice-versa for the zillionth time as he heads to Russia to save his son who is accused of murder.
Movie Review:
Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) is back to doing what he does best. He chases the bad guys, indulges in incessant firing and explodes as many cars and heads as possible in order to rescue his estranged son Jack (Jai Courtney) from the Russian custody. Jack, on the other hand, is on his own secret mission, which gets obstructed with his dad's arrival. Can the wise-cracking dad and his wayward son keep their differences aside to kick some ass?
Diehard fans of Bruce Willis may not mind the shoddy CGI or poor story in this fifth installment of the franchise as he makes up for the flaws with his sheer presence, but somewhere, it's still not enough. The dialogues are barely witty; father-son chemistry fails to touch your heart. Story progresses hastily, thus conveniently leaving ample plot holes.
The film is a carnival of mindless action, which may appeal to the action junkies, provided you don't expect 'practicality'. The action scenes are not convincing enough to keep you engaged. They fail to create the tension required. Having said that, the film does not have dull moments either, the method in the madness is what is missing.
Certain scenes do amuse, especially the one where Willis tries to converse with a Russian cab driver in Russian. Also the long car crash sequence which goes on for a good 10 minutes!
Its time the franchise reinvents itself.

Kai Po Che!:

Critic's Rating:
Cast: Raj Kumar, Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Amrita Puri
Direction: Abhishek Kapoor
Genre: Drama
Duration: 2 hours 6 minutes
Story:
Three close friends - Govind, Ishaan and Omi -- seem inseparable. But can they overcome the odds to stay together for life?
Movie Review:
Welcome to another sensitive and superlative friendship film. Like other memorable cinema in this category, Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Rang De Basanti(2006), Rock On!! (from the same director, Abhishek Kapoor, in 2008) and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Kai Po Che, too, is a story of male bonding in the time of the devastating Gujarat earthquake and the disturbing Godhra riots.
Based on Chetan Bhagat's The 3 Mistakes of My Life, in his second outing,Abhishek Kapoor raises the bar by giving us a thoroughly enjoyable film that showcases the strong emotions between the three protagonists who are boisterous, ballistic and at times plain bored.
The film captures their trials and tribulations in the post-college, pre-what-career-to-pursue period. They have two passions -- cricket and their camaraderie. And two of them (Ishaan and Omi) also have concerned parents who want them to find direction quickly. They find temporary succour when they turn their passion for the sport into a business venture; opening a store selling sports equipment. The rebellious Ishaan (whose raison d'etre is cricket) sobers down a bit as he lands an opportunity to impart cricket coaching to the neighbourhood Muslim boy, Ali.
But the screenplay gathers momentum when tragedy strikes in the form of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and the 2002 Godhra riots. Both these calamities expose the chinks in the armour of the friendship between the boys. They also throw open the can of worms that brought to light the tainted Hindu-Muslim hatred, one of the darkest chapters in the history of Gujarat.
There is also a nicely handled romantic track between Amrita Puri (Vidya) and Govind that adds a lovely touch to the proceedings. The performances of the three boys -- Sushant Singh Rajput (Ishaan), Raj Kumar Yadav (Govind) and Amit Sadh (Omi) -- are the finest one has seen. A special mention for Sushant who has the best role and manages to do full justice to it. Amrita Puri is very likeable. Amit Trivedi's music is soulful, leaving you mesmerised.
Despite the disturbing backdrop of death, destruction and politics, Kai Po Che is very likeable. Between tears, you find yourself smiling, because it's the story of friendship and human triumph above all else.
Note: You will not like this movie if slice-of-life films with intense emotions are not your cup of tea.

Land Rover New Freelander 2:

Expected Launch Month: February 2013
Expected Price: Rs 34.00 L - 40.00 L
The gorgeous Evoque may have stolen its thunder but the new freshened up Freelander 2 takes care of that to some extent. The new Freelander 2 has new colours, exterior design features, upgraded equipment levels. The exterior design details have been revamped including a more contemporary lights front and rear using the LED technology and a new signature graphic in the front running lights. The XS model gains all-new 17-inch alloy wheels and an enhanced bodystyling pack. The new colours are Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue. The grille and fog lamp bezels now sport a bright finish and there are paint detailing changes to the front grille surround, insert bars and fender vent to harmonise the different elements. While as you can see the basic design is same to the current Freelander it looks more upmarket and sleeker.

The first thing you notice when entering the Freelander 2's contemporary looking cabin is a brand new centre console. The original Terrain Response dial has been replaced by switches and a shutter reveals additional storage space. An optional 'Dynamic' theme is based on the SE models and this comes in three new colours, Ebony, Ivory or Pimento, each with matching stitching and co-ordinated door casings to complete the look. A new instrument cluster with a 5-inch screen displaying primary vehicle-related information, such as temperature and fuel levels, gear positions and Terrain Response mode, now sits between the dials across the Freelander model range, complemented with steering wheel toggle switches to operate the clearest of drop down menus and vehicle set-up details.
Cabin space and safety are improved with the introduction of an intelligent electric parking brake which adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. The system is so intelligent it even takes into account whether the brakes are hot or cold. If hot, the system 'wakes up' periodically to ensure clamping force is not lost as the brakes cool down. Despite being operated by a single switch, the electric parking brake may still be used as an emergency brake, automatically selecting the most stable braking method by employing skid prevention techniques.
An additional safety feature ensures the brake cannot be released unless the driving seat is occupied. More convenience comes in the form of Passive Start which replaces the key docking system, meaning that as long as the key is somewhere inside the car, the engine starts at the touch of a button. Another new feature for Freelander 2 is the screen operated, 7-Day Timed Climate allowing you to warm up the engine before you step inside your vehicle.
Rear view camera capability is also introduced in 2012. The view from the back of the vehicle is displayed on the Infotainment screen with dynamic lines representing the boundaries of the vehicle and your predicted path as you reverse. The system also incorporates 'Hitch Assist', a graphic superimposed on the camera showing the position of the tow ball. The new 'Say What You See' voice activation system will prompt the driver visually with the commands he or she needs to speak in order to control functions in the audio, optional satellite navigation, climate and phone systems. The prompts are displayed in an easy-to-follow 'step by step' format on the screen.
For the first time on Freelander 2, the premium Meridian audio system is available with a choice of 380W or 825W. The Meridian sound system is delivered with a new 7-inch colour touch-screen and either the 380W, 11-speaker system for exceptional stereo sound quality or the impressive 825W surround sound 17-speaker system with Trifield technology. Both are equipped with subwoofers for a deep, bass sound and Audyssey MultEQ audio tuning system.
A new and upgraded 80W 8-speaker unit with 5-inch colour display screen is also available at entry-level. Equipped with AM/FM and DAB radio tuners, the music players support CD, DVD, Virtual CD, iPod and USB. There's also a 3.5mm aux jack input for music players and Bluetooth audio streaming to any supporting devices including headphones. The virtual CD comprises a hard drive which can store the equivalent of up to 10 Audio CDs identifiable using Gracenote.
With this generation of Freelander 2, models are simply differentiated by trim level and not by powertrain specification. Entry level to the range is the Freelander S with cloth seats as standard. The SE has been enhanced with distinguishing detail features such as a gloss black grille surround and comes with full leather* and the Meridian sound system. The Dynamic version based on the SE, has gloss black fender vents and grille bars with black grille surround, complemented on the interior with three colourway choices of sport-themed electric leather seats. Top of the range is the HSE with a grained leather and wood interior as standard. There's the option of 19-inch Diamond Turned wheels and Grand Black Lacquer finisher and also Windsor leather seats with premium carpet mats for that extra special touch.
Engine wise the petrol has been changed but has no relevance to the Indian market as the diesel is sold because diesel engines are of high importance in our market and though the petrol will be a good addition to the range do not have high hopes to get this engine in India. Still, new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine makes 240PS and 340 Nm of torque.
The diesels remain the same and include the 2.2-litre 150PS TD4 and 190PS SD4 with four-wheel drive. All Freelander 2 models are equipped with six-speed manual transmission and Stop/Start. As is with any Land Rover there is the Terrain Response system which optimises the electronic systems for conditions and there are four settings, General Driving, Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud & Ruts and Sand. Gradient Release control. As you know Land Rovers are famous for their go anywhere ability and this one is no different thanks to all that tech I just talked about!
Safety too is well covered with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Roll Stability Control (RSC) and Engine Drag Control. Phew!
All Freelanders are equipped with Land Rover's Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM) which includes Smart Regenerative Charging. This feature ensures that, where possible, the alternator only charges the battery as the vehicle is decelerating, recovering kinetic energy rather than consuming fuel. IPSM was designed as part of Land Rover's e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES programme which aims to continually improve engineering efficiency in every Land Rover.

BMW new 7-Series:

Expected Launch Month: February 2013
Expected Price: Rs 1.00 Cr - 1.20 Cr
Trust us, this is indeed a face-lift. While it does similar to the current 7-series, trust BMW to make significant upgrades to its limo. Its needs to as the new Merc S-Class is closer to launch and the Audi A8 has teared open the luxury segment. From the front, the upright new BMW kidney grille is bigger and more pronounced as ever. The grille's chrome surround is now larger, a change which - together with a new slat arrangement (nine slats instead of 12) - gives it greater presence on the road. Plus you get optional new full-LED headlights.

The large, full-width air intake dominating the lower section of the modified front apron is now split into three sections, a pair of chrome bars marking its outer sections. Two narrow vertical air intakes sit beyond even the LED foglamps to the left and right of the wide intake. These are included as part of the "air curtain" technology, which lowers fuel consumption at higher speeds by forcing the air to flow more aerodynamically around the front wheels. A new design feature that stands out from the side is the indicator integrated into the lower section of each exterior mirror, which makes the car easier to see.
The horizontal lines and subdivision of the rear into several levels visually lowers the height of the car. The design of the brand's familiar L-shaped rear lights, linked by chrome strip, remains unchanged. They are, however, richer in contrast thanks to differing shades of red. A second, delicately sculpted chrome strip draws a visual connection between the two slim reflectors in the rear apron. Another slim chrome bar between the four chromed tailpipe embellishers in the rear apron is a distinguishing feature of the 12-cylinder flagship model. Inside, the new BMW 7-Series can be specified as an option with individual rear seats that can be adjusted to suit individual requirements.
The backrest angle and seat position can both be varied, as can the position of the head restraints. The controls are the same as those for the front seats with memory function. There is a new Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System even more powerfully to the fore. The 1,200-watt music system is hooked up to 16 speakers, some of which are positioned behind illuminated, satin-finish aluminium grilles sited in the mirror triangles of the doors and the parcel shelf. The most attention-seizing member of the speaker line-up is the illuminated centre speaker which extends out of the instrument panel and uses B&O Acoustic Lens Technology.
All the engines available for the new 7-Series team up with an intelligent eight-speed automatic transmission. The Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration and the second-generation Driving Experience Control switch with ECO PRO mode offer additional potential for fuel-saving. Alongside the flagship BMW 760li with 12-cylinder powerplant, customers can choose from the new six-cylinder in-line unit powering the BMW 740i and the revised V8 petrol engine in the BMW 750i. The six-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 730d and BMW 740d also offer drivers the combination of increased output and lower fuel consumption. Making its debut, meanwhile, is the new BMW 750d xDrive. Under its bonnet lies the new TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder diesel engine - the world's most powerful diesel engine of its kind. Rounding off the range is the second-generation BMW ActiveHybrid 7 with new six-cylinder in-line engine and significantly reduced emissions. The new ECO PRO mode, meanwhile, helps the BMW 7-Series driver to maintain an extra-efficient and economy-conscious driving style. It does this by changing the accelerator mapping so that the same pedal travel delivers less power than in the standard mode.
The new BMW limo has the latest professional navigation system is compelling at first glance for its revised design and honed operating system. The tried-and-tested menu navigation has been consciously retained and augmented by further functions. The user interface has benefited from a complete graphic revision and now comprises 3D elements exclusively, while the entire architecture of the individual menus is now presented in virtual, three-dimensional spaces.
